Folsom, Sacramento County
Folsom State Prison opened in 1880 behind granite walls quarried on the site, the second prison built in California. Johnny Cash recorded a live album in its dining hall on January 13, 1968, and the record made the name known around the world. A small museum outside the gate tells the history of the prison.
